Experience WARSAW

Saturday - February 6, 2010 – 7:30 PM
Patriots Theater

Boheme Opera New Jersey is proud to present a preview of an amazing production making its way to Broadway entitled WARSAW. The creators of the piece have offered to bring its preview to Patriots Theater at the Trenton War Memorial as a benefit for Boheme Opera. Save the date for a compelling evening you will never forget!

WARSAW is an epic musical drama that has a passionate, soaring score with the breathtaking sweep of Les Miserables and the rich harmonic texture of grand opera. This powerful theater piece is a Broadway bound production based on the true heroic story of the Warsaw ghetto fighters who led an uprising against the Nazis in 1943. Their courageous uprising inspired many heroic acts of resistance throughout ghettos and concentration camps of occupied Europe. The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was the first and largest revolt by Jews during the Holocaust, and a symbol of the indomitableness of the human spirit.

WHO’S AFRAID OF OPERA:
THE SCHICCHI PROJECT

Friday – March 5, 2010 – 11 AM  High School Student Audience from various NJ Counties and Bucks, PA
Sunday – March 7, 2010 – 3 PM Public performance – subscription event

Patriots Theater at The War Memorial

Welcome to Boheme Opera New Jersey’s newest educational initiative, Who’s Afraid of Opera, which incorporates Giacomo Puccini’s hilarious one-act comedy, Gianni Schicchi.
Our goal is to introduce a new audience of young teens and adults to the world of opera.

Who’s Afraid of Opera is an educational component created by Boheme Opera New Jersey. It will be presented on the main stage as an open-curtain bird’s eye view of the details of opera preparation.  Following this innovative presentation will be a fully staged production of Gianni Schicchi.

Come and witness opera theater, an art form that has the largest growing attraction for young singers, directors and designers in the United States today.  Special group rates and guides will make your experience easy, fun, affordable and memorable.  Best of all, it’s right here in your own backyard!

Friday, March 5 at 11 AM:
We are inviting teens and their teachers to a live opera theater event during the school day.  Boheme Opera New Jersey performs in a wonderful venue, the Patriots Theater at the War Memorial, located in the center of the Capital Complex, in New Jersey’s State Capital.  High school students and teachers from Mercer County and surrounding New Jersey Counties, as well as Bucks County, PA will attend free of charge, responsible only for their transportation to the venue.
Before the opera performance, we have created an open-curtain presentation that will piece together our production of Gianni Schicchi. Students will receive a fast forward view of how the different elements of a production come together for a finished product.  Two young host actors will guide audiences through a brief overview of opera logistics and backstage preparation.  They will then give a synopsis of Gianni Schicchi and bridge the educational component to the fully staged performance, which is complete with costumes, makeup, sets, lighting, orchestra and a fabulous cast of young artists.
To make the opera more appealing and understandable, it will be sung in English. Our selection is the delightful one-act comic opera Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini, a masterpiece of musical composition with libretto by Giovacchino Forzano.  The story of Gianni Schicchi has its roots in the brilliant classic of Dante’s Inferno.  This opera lends itself to modernization and audiences should hear the comic deliveries in English.
Before the class trip date, Boheme will send a curriculum-based packet to each teacher/moderator, which includes a manual of opera terms, a brief history of opera, special insights on Gianni Schicchi and Puccini, a set of job descriptions for all behind-the-scenes personnel, and biographies on Boheme’s artists and professionals.
Who’s Afraid of Opera will include Boheme’s backstage production staff, including the stage director, conductor, production manager, stage manager, dresser, lighting designer and makeup artist/wig designer.  The principal singers have been cast with an eye towards youth and diversity.  We are giving the young singing artist, just beginning a career, an opportunity to be a part of this project.  Participating in a project like Gianni Schicchi is a great way to start building a resume, professional contacts and work experience.  It is also a great stepping-stone to other professional productions.
After the opera performance, there will be time for a brief question-and-answer period with the cast and professionals.  At the close of the event, while students are exiting the venue, they will receive a written overview of Boheme’s Apprenticeship Program encouraging application for admission to work with the company backstage, onstage or in the administrative office of the company.

Sunday, March 7 at 3 PM:
This public performance will include many of the ingredients of the student audience performance, and will feature Boheme’s program playbill comprising much of the curriculum-based information, along with season information on the company.  Special family and group rates are being offered via the Boheme Opera Box Office.  This performance is a subscription event, coupled with The Pirates of Penzance in April 2010.

For information about bringing your family, your group or becoming a subscriber, please call (609) 581-7200.
